A few days ago I arose early, stopped for a good cup of Southern Pecan coffee at a market in Lexington, popped “The Shell Seekers” (a favorite book and movie) audiotape into my car’s tape player, and took a deep breath. For a day I was a world away from deadlines and other daily duties even though this was a working trip.

Crime Stoppers held their annual Golf Tournament at Jackson National Golf Club on Monday, June 3. The tournament, sponsored by Allen Samuels, was a great success and all funds raised benefited the Crime Stoppers organization, a partnership between the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Jackson Police Department.

The historic Cumberland House was the chosen site for the Jazz in the Garden event for the Jackson Symphony League. The grounds, which are beautifully landscaped, set the mood for dining and dancing. The Paula Bridges Band serenaded the guests as they enjoyed the hors d’oeuvres and desserts on the patio of the house.

The board of the Kirkland Cancer Center and their friends held the third annual Simply Southern event at Madison Downs Event Venue in Jackson on Friday evening, May 10. The event was held to raise funds for the center and to further it on its mission to serve the area’s cancer patients. Last year the event raised $32,000, and the board noted that the goal for 2019 was to surpass 2018’s total funds raised. In the past, the event was titled Simply Seersucker, but the board decided to change the name to open it up to a broader theme of Simply Southern. Still though, many attendees donned outfits of the blue and white fabric, and those who did not were outfitted in equally fitting Southern culture suits, dresses, tops and slacks. It was a wonderful time for an even better cause raising funds to benefit those in our community facing a battle with cancer.

This year’s event featured Dr. Shirley Raines, who spoke about the organization’s importance in the lives of children and their families as well as the lifelong benefits of reading regularly.

Perhaps it’s because I am an Aquarian, but like Tracey Rapisardi, author of “Simply by the Sea,” I am a lover of water. I never tire of walking by the ocean or viewing the barges and pleasure boats on the Mississippi River. Years ago I lived a half mile from the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, California. I treasured getting lost in my thoughts as I walked the beach daily. I spent much of my professional life in Memphis, where I saw the Mississippi River almost daily. Since 1981 I have traveled to historic Natchez, Mississippi, mostly to sit on a hotel balcony in Vidalia, Louisiana and observe the skyline of Natchez; view with high powered binoculars the ever moving, ever changing river; and wave at the barge captains and deckhands. Several steamboats dock in Natchez, and they beckon me to go onboard. (I’m convinced that in a previous life I lived on a steamboat.) At dusk the Mississippi River bridge lights come on, and it is magical. While it is not an ocean, the Mississippi River has almost the same effect on me.

The American Heart Association hosted its annual Go Red for Women event at the Carl Perkins Civic Center on March 21 to to raise awareness of women’s risk of heart disease and build a healthier West Tennessee. Female heart disease survivors were recognized including Savannah Conley, a very young mother and wife whose female side of the family had severe heart disease. On the evening of the dinner, Savannah was present with her new heart and her young daughter to walk the survivor runway with joy and pride. Approximately $197,000 was raised for the Heart Association.
