I Am Jackson: Roger Smith

Roger Smith

What is your hometown?

I was born in Jackson and have lived here most of my life.

What is your profession?

I am an independent insurance broker. I grew up in a service-oriented family business, but when I earned my MBA from Memphis State University, I was inspired to have my own business. Rebecca and I purchased Associated Insurance Services, an established Jackson company founded in 1928. It provided me with the opportunity to learn more about area businesses as I solicited the privilege to provide their insurance coverage. To properly insure a business, one needs to understand its history and operational details, which was intriguing.

Where have you volunteered or contributed your time in efforts to give back?
My son, George, is an Eagle Scout. Other dads and I became assistant Scout Masters to help plan activities to keep our sons interested in Scouting. I became active in the work of the West Tennessee Area Council.
As President-Elect of The Jackson Symphony, I enjoy the work we do promoting the symphony and the arts in the community. The Jackson Symphony, one of the best in this region, is fortunate to be led and managed by a strong, capable staff supported by a board of committed community leaders.
My most meaningful volunteer experience has been serving as Chairman of the Greater Jackson Chamber, which is recognized nationally as best-in-class and is either leading or participating in most important local and regional initiatives
My first Chamber experience was with the Humboldt Chamber of Commerce. I served there as President when it was announced that Humboldt’s Cedar Crest Hospital would close. A call to the late health system CEO Jim Moss resulted in Jackson Madison County General Hospital District purchasing the Humboldt hospital, resulting in the beginning of West Tennessee Healthcare.

What are some of your favorite things about Jackson?
I love the history of Jackson -- agriculture, railroads, manufacturing- each impacting our heritage. We also have great music history to celebrate. I am excited to participate in the planning of Jackson’s first Rockabilly Festival celebrating Carl Perkins coming this April. Rockabilly is an international phenomenon that we should be capitalizing on.

Three words that best describe you:

Curious, passionate, promoter.

Favorite place for going out?

The redevelopment activity downtown is exciting! The number of people living downtown along with the food, shopping and entertainment opportunities make for a good vibe and a good feeling about the future of downtown.
My family had a business on Main Street, I attend church downtown and my grandfather, former Mayor George Smith, had an office in the old City Hall building. I spent a lot of time downtown in my early life and have some great memories. It is fun to continue making memories there.

What is one thing you do not go a day without?

Conversation with my wife, Rebecca, about life, our children Rebecca and George, our five grandchildren, and our next adventure.

I Am Jackson because…

Jackson is engrained in me. One can seek out a place to live where they are comfortable, but it is special when you live in a place that fulfills you. Yes, family heritage, family friends, business success, and one’s faith can be fulfilling, but the Jackson community is special. Jackson provides all the elements for me that make life good.
