There was a great celebration at the Oman Arena, where the Jackson-Madison County African American Chamber of Commerce held the 17th Annual Jewel Awards. Lively soul music was playing as guests arrived for the evening’s festivities. The caterer was Carolyn Reed of Brownsville, and she provided very organized and expedient service for the dining guests.

Nell Huntspon and the staff provided the attendees with an efficient and entertaining night of fun and recognition. Two special guests were American Idol contestants — Lil Rounds and Keia Johnson, who charmed the audience with their musical renditions. The master of ceremonies was Rep. Johnny Shaw and mistress of ceremonies was Gloria Jean Sweet-Love. Joseph McKinny and the band “Soulink” were on their game playing foot-tapping music. Numerous awards were presented during the recognition portion of the program.
