The Leadership Jackson Alumni Association (LJAA) presented Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children “An Evening with Marilyn Van Derbur” to educate West Tennesseans on the prevention of child sexual abuse on September 28 at Union University’s Carl Grant Events Center.

Being raised in The Salvation Army she moved frequently, but she learned quickly by watching her parents how necessary their work was. Cheryl observed at an early age the devastation of drug and alcohol addiction. This instilled in her a desire to carry on the ministry to which her parents had devoted their lives. Cheryl began working for The Salvation Army at age 16. In 2003 she met her husband, David, while working in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. The two became best friends and married in 2008.

This building once housed Memphis Power and Light, predecessor of Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division. (Joe Rogers was the founder of the Waffle House.) Jan and Joe communicated with each other prior to his recent death. He sent Jan his book and he remained interested in his former home on West Deaderick. He had a great memory of the homes in his neighborhood and he even mailed Jan layouts of some of the homes as they were when he lived in that neighborhood years ago.
