No Place Like Home: Montana Modern

Story & Photography by Lindsay Allison

Nestled among lush, green grass and stately oak trees and centrally located in the heart of North Jackson stands the barn of Flint Cox and Kelly Smith. Upon first arrival, one is immediately drawn to the tranquil sound of the beautiful waterfall and gated entry. Built for sharing memories and relaxing with family and friends, this is not only a barn but a home away from home.

Once inside, you are met with a beautifully designed and decorated interior that would rival any luxury residence. Key elements of modern western decor create a Montana ambience throughout. Kelly designed the home and spoke to me about the process.

Is it new construction or a remodel? What was the other reason that started the design process for this house?

Kelly Smith: It is new construction. The homeowner wanted a place for family and friends to gather, to entertain clients and to have a place to get away and relax.

Who is the builder?

KS: The builder was Carter Construction along with the homeowner’s construction company.

Who were the main vendors that were used to decorate the house?

KS: The upholstery in the main living area is the Robin Bruce collection from Rowe Furniture. The master bedroom branch bed is from Century Furniture. The saddle barstools were custom-made at the homeowner’s request.

How would you describe the design of this house?

KS: The barn design is a beautiful marriage of contemporary and transitional styles. We wanted natural light to flood the lower level so we used commercial storefront windows with distressed barn wood tile floors.

What do you love most about each room and why?

KS: I love the fact that the home has such a large space, yet it feels so comfortable and inviting. We have collected several things from our travels that we have incorporated in this project. That being said, it’s hard to pick my favorite, but we get the most comments on the saddle barstools. Working on this project has been so much fun because it is such a unique space with a fun and elegant vibe. I have truly loved it!

What are some specific personal touches that you used?

KS: The unique concrete trough sinks in the bathrooms. They were made by local concrete design company Modern Edge Concrete owned by Brandon Browning.
