Canstruction: An Evening with Michael W. Smith

Story & Photography by Woody Woodard

Michael W. Smith was the entertainer of choice for Canstruction 2016 presented by RIFA. Smith has sold over 15 million albums, had 28 number-one songs, received three Grammy Awards and 40 Dove awards. At the ASCAP’s 100th Anniversary, Michael W. Smith was recognized as a “Cornerstone of Christian Music.”

Toyota Bodine Aluminum won the “Structural Integrity Award” and “Best in Show” for the event. They are a six-year contributing sponsor and their Slinky-Dog sculpture was quite the achievement. Their team was thinking outside the box this year.

The canned food used in the displays will go to feed hundreds of needy families and school children. The donated canned food is measured in thousands of pounds, not by the box.
When the individual churches agreed they could help more people by combining their efforts, then the structure of RIFA came into existence. From their simple community project and fellowship with local churches back in 1976 to 40 years later, RIFA has been a God thing!
